Who the hell are JAX and the Wayward?

JAX and the Wayward is powerhouse vocals and quality, hard hitting rock/thumpfunk. The Hobart-based band features Jacqui ‘JAX’ Smialek on vocals and guitar, Malcolm ‘BAT’ Battersby on guitar, Tenille ‘TJ’ Johnstone on drums, and guest Dan Cooper on bass.

Jax’s vocal delivery has been likened to Janis Joplin, Beth Hart, and Dolores O’Riordan.

JAX and the Wayward is raw, driven, gutsy, energetic, and funky.

JAX and the Wayward’s latest offering, PUSH, was released worldwide on August 18, 2017. The six track EP features a bonus track with guest artist George Begbie on piano.

Career highlights include opening for Reece Mastin’s Launceston and Hobart shows of his Suitcase of Stories Tour 2018, opening for Spiderbait on the Hobart date of their sold out Ivy & the Big Apples tour 2017, opening for Icehouse on one of their 2016 Hobart tour dates, placing third nationally in the Global Battle of the Bands Australia in 2016, multiple music festivals, and supports for several Tasmanian and interstate bands and agency bands, including a state tour in 2016.

JAX and the Wayward played across three stages at Falls Music & Arts Festival 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, and 2018/19 in Marion Bay, Festival of King Island 2017, and headlined the Adventure Bay Blues & Roots Festival 2016.

JAX and the Wayward are set to support Melbourne band Ablaze on the Tasmanian leg of their upcoming Australian ‘Long Way Home’ single tour. They’re currently recording fresh material in the studio (with a new album on the horizon), preparing for a couple of single music video releases, gigging statewide, and are seeking new opportunities to bring their brand of raw, original, hard rock to Mainland Australia and Europe.
